Al Betz

Al Betz began his court reporting career in 1968 at the age of 19. His career traveled the path from the Maryland Workers' Compensation Commission to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. In 1977, Al entered the freelance court reporting business. Al has a nationwide reputation as a realtime reporter, an author, and a leader in the court reporting world. As an author, he has interviewed and transcribed the stories of numerous subjects including families of 9/11 victims in an effort to preserve their loved ones' life stories. He has published three books, including Outfluence: The Better Way to Influence, Polishing the Pearl: The Art of Professional Performance, and PowerWriters: Stories of the World's Trusted Court Reporters and Captioners, each of which is available online at www.outfluence.com. He is a member of the National Court Reporters Association, the Maryland Court Reporters Association, and the National Speakers Association.

Kay Betz

Since earning her MBA from Mt. St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1995, Kay Betz has been an instructor in the Graduate Program at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. She has utilized her management training at Al Betz & Associates, Inc. as its Chief Financial Officer since 1996.

Matt Betz

Leveraging nearly two decades of distinguished service as an officer and as an academy instructor, Matt Betz has put his degree in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement to work both in the professional security field and in law enforcement. He has transitioned the decision-making skills, a commitment to task, and his leadership experience on various law enforcement teams to managing the demands of the fast-paced 24/7 court reporting profession. Matt joined the family business in 1996 and is responsible for the company's daily operations. He remains very active in the law enforcement field today.

Ryan Black

As one of the firm's partners, Ryan Black is responsible for client relations and retention, territory growth and development, and organizational leadership for the expanded service area of PA, as well as throughout the AB&A organization. He will also support the firm's clients with court reporting services, specializing in Real Time and Webstream Deposition Reporting, and offering daily copy and expedited transcripts. Ryan also provides Communications Access Realtime Translation (CART) services for the hearing impaired. A Registered Professional Reporter (RPR), Certified Livenote Reporter (CLR), and Certified State Reporter in Delaware (CSR-DE), his career as a court reporter spans 13 years. He is the former Director and Chief Official Court Reporter for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations and administration of the court reporting department of the Lancaster County Courthouse.

Kathy Claypoole Gast

A law degree and 15 years of management experience in a large, fast-paced law firm have provided Kathy with a unique understanding of the expectations and needs of our clients.  An experienced attorney, she is today the company’s Office Administrator.

Dave Hodgston

The firm's IT specialist is Dave Hodgston. With years of professional experience in Information Technology, Dave is responsible for keeping Al Betz & Associates, Inc. at the forefront of court reporting and related technologies.

Nick Shearman

A candidate for BA degrees in both sociology and geography at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Nick Shearman helps ensure the utmost accuracy in the company's production department, supporting deposition document management, transcription, binding, and editing processes. He also contributes to design initiatives and marketing collateral development, bringing a keen eye for detail and a commitment to product excellence.
