About Us Al Betz & Associates, Inc. is a family business, owned and operated by Al, Kay,
and their son Matt.
Al began his court reporting career in 1968 at the age of 19. His career traveled the path from the Maryland Workers´ Compensation Commission to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. In 1977, Al entered the freelance court reporting business. Al has a nationwide reputation as a realtime reporter, an author, and a leader in the court reporting world. As an author, he has interviewed and transcribed the stories of numerous subjects, including families of 9/11 victims in an effort to preserve their loved ones' life stories. His latest work, Polishing the Pearl: The Art of Professional Performance is a guide for court reporters seeking inspiration and knowledge. He is a member of the National Court Reporters Association, the Maryland Court Reporters Association, and the National Speakers Association.
Since earning her M.B.A. from Mt. St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1995, Kay has been an instructor in the Graduate Program at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. She has utilized her management training at Al Betz & Associates, Inc. as its Chief Financial Officer since 1996.
Matt has put his degree in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement to work both in the professional security field and in law enforcement, which included nearly two decades of distinguished service in leadership positions and as an academy instructor. Matt joined the family business in 1996 and is responsible for the continuing development of our digital court reporting division.
Our IT specialist is Dave Hodgston. With years of professional experience in Information Technology, he is responsible for keeping Al Betz & Associates, Inc. at the forefront of court reporting and related technologies.
A degree in Education, years of experience in the education profession, and extensive computer experience have all provided Kris Hayes with a broad array of skills in training and management. An experienced professional digital court reporter, Kris is today the company's Office Manager.
Robert “Rob” Leonard joined us in December 2009 as the Director of Marketing and Relationship Management. He is an accomplished professional who is proud of many successes in his 20-year business career. Rob will use his expertise in media relations, brand management, business development, product launches, product positioning, podium presentations and internet marketing in his role with Al Betz & Associates. If you ask Rob about the Blue Moon Big Band and their fabulous lead vocalist, you will enjoy listening to a man speak with great passion about two of his major life accomplishments.
